CPM Cru-Wear, a high quality carbon steel for knifemaking.
CPM Cru-Wear is manufactured by Crucible Industries, an American company whose know-how in special steels is recognized worldwide. CPM Cru-Wear is a concentrate of expertise, a carbon steel of exceptional quality, perfectly suited for cutlery. CPM Cru-Wear is indeed a tool steel that could be considered as an improved version of the famous D2 (Z160CDV12). It will offer a much higher wear resistance, as well as a better hardness.
CPM Cru-Wear steel, for the most demanding knifemakers.
The special composition of CPM Cru-Wear steel gives it particularly interesting technical properties for knifemaking.
- Excellent edge retention
- High theoretical hardnesses allowed according to the heat treatment applied
- Good corrosion resistance for a carbon steel (7.5% chrome)
- Excellent resistance to wear
- Easy to sharpen
In addition to being ideal for knife blades, CPM Cru-Wear steel will be appreciated in the manufacture of razor blades and other tools where high hardness is essential.
How to harden CPM Cru-Wear?
As CPM Cru-Wear is a technical grade, its heat treatment must be rigorously followed to reveal its full potential: you will find all our recommendations in its technical data sheet, freely available for consultation and download. Thus, CPM Cru-Wear must be hardened at relatively high temperatures for a carbon steel (1065°C). We also recommend three tempering cycles, each lasting two hours, at 540°C, to obtain the best hardness/corrosion resistance ratio allowed by this exceptional grade.
